The 2012 Wrigley’s Orbit
professional gum ad; Don’t let lunch meet breakfast, is a in my opinion a very
poor advertisement. Using a very scared looking chicken with a fried egg at its
feet the Wrigley ad tries to evoke feelings of worry and horror from the viewers.
The ad is meant for people with lingering bad breath, but it’s not only selling
breath freshening gum but the peace of mind that you won’t send people running
every time you open your mouth. However the text of the article; don’t let
lunch meet breakfast, when combined with the picture of the chicken is
confusing to some viewers and over thought to others.
The ad does have some minor comedy embedded in
it but not enough to make the advertisement truly entertaining or worthy of
purchase. Wrigley’s ad pushes the common belief that all chicken eggs are
important to chickens when in truth if the chicken didn’t lay the eggs itself
and the eggs aren’t fertilized then the chicken couldn’t care less about the
eggs. This ad also teases the question which came first the chicken or the egg?
In this case it’s the egg sense that’s what you had for breakfast however if
you come to this question you’re thinking too much and probably shouldn’t buy
the gum.
The ideas and misconceptions pushed
by the ad are inconsequential and wholly ineffective. The setup of the ad is
dull, the overall message was overly complicated, and the minor amount of comedy
in the ad isn’t enough to make up for its other failings.

This advertisement took me a moment to understand so, it could of been more catchy and attention grabbing with a first impression. I think the message of bad breathe lingering is good but not sold through the advertisement enough. It's just a thought because nobody wants to be that person with bad breathe with smells of breakfast lingering out of your breath as you speak in the afternoon. I don't quite understand why they would use a chicken or egg to sell gum because I don't really see how they are making them connect with one another.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you when you say it’s a poor advertisement. It is a simple picture with a simple slogan yet it is very confusing to understand. The slogan is very small and if I didn’t see it, it would be hard to tell what the Wrigley’s ad is trying to say. I also see how according to this ad that the egg came first because that’s what was eaten first but I don’t know how that question relates to their product. This ad needs more help on being effective and not so complicated. I like that you picked an ad that you didn’t really agree with to analyze.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Theresa, the ad was unoriginal, poorly thought out, and non humorus.the advertisement does not convey the need nor desire to purchase the gum. The advertisement only serves to make me want to brush my teeth.
